one speaker not working with cd player

I would lean toward a bad connection cable between the CD player and receiver to be your dead channel problem. Reverse the connections at the receiver and check if the problem follows the cable swap.

The distorted surround channel can be due to a number of reasons. Amplifier problems, source problems or speaker problems. Disconnect the CD player (like it is now for example) and switch the receiver to the "hall" mode. You should have clean audio at the surround channel as long as one channel's input is dropped. If the audio is still poor - you have a problem.
