They may make claims to that effect, but given the wavelength of the frequencies that come from the ports (many feet), it really shouldn't make any difference.

The port wave that is produced is many feet long and is going to reflect off the rear walls if your speakers are fairly close no matter where the port is located, speakerwise.

Consider that the wavelength of a 30Hz wave is 30+ feet and most ports don't put out much above 200Hz (at the highest) -- the wavelength at 200Hz is still around 6 feet.
