Speaker polarity: which is what on an old stereo?

If you can remove the speaker grilles or perhaps see through them it is easy to test which wire is positive.

Just use a small battery such as a singe AA. Get some jumper wires and momentarily touch the plus and minus battery terminals to the center and outer terminals of the speaker cable. Take note of the woofer cone and relationship of the battery terminals to the speaker wire terminals.

When the positive and negative terminals of the battery are paired (respectively)with the positive and negative terminals of the speaker the woofer cone should move "out". If the connections are reversed the woofer cone will move in.
