Mike:

I've had a 6 speaker ProLogic system for about 5 years. And what I've noted is about 60% of the sound comes through the center speaker. With my ProLogic setup, which consists of the 3 front speakers, a subwoofer and the 2 rear surround speakers, the center speakers carries about 95% of the voices and 1/3 of the other sounds that come from the front 3 speakers. Think of the front 3 speakers as being a seamless wall of sound with the voices coming mostly through the center channel. The voices come mostly through the center channel as the people are mostly in the center of the picture. The rear surrounds serve as “fill-in” sound or as is usually said, the ambiance.

So even if one has a Dolby Digital setup, the key to the realism of the setup, is the wall of sound that the front three speakers put out and with DD the added ambiance coming from the surrounds. So the center speaker not only puts out voices but background sounds too. The better the front speaker is, the easier it is to understand the words that are spoken, along with the background, which is really what a movie is about. The fill in sounds just adds to the realism for me and if I can’t understand what is being said, then that realism disappears.
