In my experience, the centre channel speaker is the most important component of all the channels. It has the most content going to any of the six channels and therefore works the hardest. Spending $500 or more on a centre channel speaker is definitely justifyable. If you only watch movies that are dialogue based, then you could get by with a very good $300 centre channel speaker. But most movies contain special effects and music soundtracks which requires a quality full range speaker for maximum performance. If you also like to watch music concerts, then this is even more critical. If you have to skimp on speakers, you could possibly get by with $100 for a pair of rear surrounds.
