If you will be the only person watching the movie, and you sit equidistant from both main speakers, you do not need a center channel (you would set your processor/receiver to "phantom" mode). In fact, many claim this is the best way to watch a movie by yourself. However, if there are other people watching with you, it is definitely necessary to have a center speaker so that the dialog is located at the screen.
