Surround Speaker Placement and NHT

Posted by Mike L. [IP: 166.55.7.153] on February 24, 1999 at 19:05:13
Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.0; Mac_PowerPC):

I'm getting closer to reaching a decision on my setup. My remaining
options are:

1) Super Twos for front mains
Super Ones for center and surrounds
Energy ES-10 sub (primarily for HT, not music)

2) Super Twos for front mains
Super One for center
Super Zeroes for surrounds
Energy ES-10 sub (primarily for HT, not music)

3) Same as 1 but wait until April when
NHT releases SuperCenter for center

4) Same as 2 but wait until April when NHT releases Supercenter for center

Power comes from Sony 30ES
receiver (80Wx5).

I'm leaning towards 3 or 4 primarily for aesthetic reasons. The NHT technical support rep. told me that the SuperOne is best when in the upright position as opposed to laying on its side, but this wouldn't look so good atop a TV. (Anyone using a SuperOne on its side for center have any comments?)

Concerning the surrounds, I'm limited to the back upper corner of the room (approx. 20'x19'). If I go with the
SuperOnes, I'll need to mount them such that the center of the speaker is about 9'3" from the floor. If I use the SuperZeroes, I can mount them about a foot lower (it's an issue of ledges on columns). I've read many
recommendations to go with the Ones if possible, but is it worth the trade-off of an extra foot in height? The Dolby site recommends the surround height to be only 2'-3' above the viewing position - I'm another 2' above that if I use the Zeroes, and 3' above that if I use
the Ones. Which route should I take?

Also, I can mount the surrounds such
that they face frontwards towards the TV, or so that they face each other. Which is preferred?

Thanks for any inputs?

Mike
