Thanks Moz,
They are definately Canon, it says so on the front! They do sound a little like the Canton ones you mention though (they have a special bracket that mounts them in the corners of the room. The cables connect to the bracket then the speaker hooks onto it). They are shaped with a curved facia (no edges other than at the top) and have a forward facing woofer (about 6 inches) and a tweeter that faces up into some sort of moulding that deflects it outwards. I don't think it's the same canon that makes the consumer products etc.
Thanks for the advice on the A1, it's being delivered on Friday along with a Pioneer DV 515 and REL Q100E sub (couldn't afford the 717 after buying the A1!). My front speakers are an old set of (British) Castle Conways, expensive at the time, but beginning to show their age. The centre is a small Mordaunt Short CS-1. I suppose I'm going to have to hold back on the power of the A1 for a while!
Anyway, thanks again for the info, have to go, the kids want feeding (probably for the last time this month).

Cheers,
John.
