power sub on or auto

Using Mozilla/4.03 [en] (Win95; U):

I got my KLH 120w 12" power sub in 2 month . I have experienced this problem.If I set my sub to " AUTO " to watch movie in low volume at night, my sub will not turn on. It auto turn on when in mid volume therefore I have to set it to " ON " position so that I can enjoy the movie in low volume at night . So my question is how much power is the sub consumed? if I set it to " ON " versus to " auto".
second question is what advange of the " AUTO " position give to the hometheater user.
