nothing but buzzing from powered sub on LL-sub-out

Using Mozilla/4.04 [en]C-Citicorp (Win16; U):

I've connected a Toshiba SSW1020 to the line level sub out on my JVC RX-884VBK, but it only buzzes (no booms). How can I tell if the problem is with the sub or the receiver? (Yes I've set the receiver to sub=yes, and speakers = small and crossover = 120, still nothing but a constant buzz coming from the sub.) Note that the sub does not buzz when the line is not connected to the receiver.
