Speaker Impedance Question
Posted by Don C. [IP: 207.3.31.108] on February 27, 1999 at 20:31:25 In Reply to: Speaker Impedance Question posted by Barry H. Adams on February 26, 1999 at 08:43:59: You said in your post that it was a "Mini Shelf" system. I am assuming that you mean it is a "mini" sized component rather than a standard (16 1/2")component? If so, then I would strongly recommend that you do not connect this unit to speakers any lower than the recommended impedence. Most mini systems (with only a few VERY EXPENSIVE exceptions) must make design compromises in order to "squeeze" acceptable performance into minimum space. And the first place that these compromises are usually found is in the power stage output devices, especially the power supplies and transformers. Wiring your "mini" to four ohm speakers is an almost SURE way to "burn up" the output stage at worst or constantly activate the thermal protection circuitry at best. Not recommended. Stick with 8 ohm speakers in the front and 16 ohm speakers (if you can find any) in the back.
