Sound Level Meter

To use an SPL meter correctly you need a source of test noise (usually pink or white noise). All Dolby Digital and Pro-logic processors provide such noise and when calibrating the output should be 75dB from all channels. In a matrix system both rear loudspeakers playing together should be 75dB. Test tones are also available from CD, DVD and laserdisc.

If low frequencies aren't involved, an SPL meter should be set to A-Weighting, Slow mode - if low frequencies are involved then one should use C-Weighting. The meter should be at your listening position and pointed in a neutral direction (such as towards the ceiling).
