Subwoofer location/settings

In many home theatre installations when you are using full-range front loudspeakers (or those which extend below 80Hz) yes - in which case I'd suggest the next upgrade be a dedicated sub-woofer for Dolby Digital LFE. The problem comes because unless you have a Meridian, Lexicon or some Yamahas, when you listen to music the low frequencies are produced by the front pair and the sub-woofer so your bass becomes muddled and isn't at the correct level. By running the sub-woofer from the loudspeaker outputs bass is never doubled once it has been integrated with the main 'speakers carefully. In your case you're just running a two-channel system, correct? If so, you really don't have the same problems of trying to reproduce movies and music (movies with an LFE and music without). If your sub-woofer is carefully integrated using the low-level outputs you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever by changing to high-level… Unless in doing so you run through the high-pass (low-cut) filter in the sub-woofer, thus preventing low frequencies (below a specified crossover) from being produced by anything other than the sub. This is worth trying if you can spare the time, it eases the load on your amplifiers and often increases the performance of your L/R loudspeaker which are no longer burdened with the responsibility of producing low frequencies. This will of course depend on what your L/R loudspeakers are.
