DC-1's DACs: single or multi bits?

Posted by CK [IP: 193.114.243.40] on October 26, 1998 at 20:31:37:

I understand that the DC-1 uses Crystal DAC chips which are single bit type (delta sigma) that has an effective resolution of 20 bits. These are the same DAC chips used by Meridian and Audio Research, among others.

Other procesors use Burr-Brown multi-bit DAC chips (1702, 63 series) that also have an effective resolution of 20 bits, with an exception of the Proceed AVP which uses a combination of multi bit and single bit DAC chips.

Is my understanding about DAC chips correct? Now what about 24/96? Will delta sigma single bit DACs be compatible?
