DC-1's DACs: single or multi bits? Posted by Nigel [IP: 206.241.18.4] on October 27, 1998 at 11:16:03: In Reply to: DC-1's DACs: single or multi bits? posted by CK on October 26, 1998 at 20:31:37: The DC-1 uses, depending on production date, either Crystal's 20 bit 4329 chip or the 24 bit 4390 chip. Because of the rest of the DC-1'a internals the 4390's only operate at 20bit (Lexicon uses them because the 4329 is no longer supplied by Crystal). I guess that someone will come up with a 24/96 delta sigma chip, some time. Don't forget that the 24 bit stuff is a misnomer in reality as there are no DAC's yet that can truly resolve at 24 bits (thermal noise and other issues). According to a recent manufacturer response in Stereophile by Neil Sinclair of Theta, most 24 bit DAC's actually resolve nearer to 20 bits so I guess so-called 20 bit DAC's resolve at something less than 20bit. Stuart help please!!
