24 bit announcement Posted by Andre Yew [IP: 208.8.104.2] on October 29, 1998 at 11:25:12: In Reply to: 24 bit announcement posted by ck on October 28, 1998 at 21:55:59: The bit specs of DACs and ADCs are deceptive, much like they are on CPUs, because the actual performance of the chip often has no bearing to its bit specification. In the case of the Crystal parts (as well as the Burr-Brown parts, I would think), the 24-bit parts are only guaranteed not to truncate 24-bit data. While this may seem trivial, truncation of even 24-bit data with no dithering beforehand can lead to audible extraneous noises. The true resolution of the chip can only be determined by various noise vs. frequency measurements of the part _in situ_. That is, good measurements of a part on a real implementation on a real board. Therefore, it is very possible for a nominally 24-bit chip to have performance bad enough to not even realize the full potential of 16-bit audio. --Andre
