Actually, I log into this forum from a personal stand point, I own a DC-1 myself. Glad to hear you enjoy some of the DTS compact discs. Being that you are a fan of the classical releases, I strongly suggest you get your hands on the Telarc release of Holst: The Planets. In the next couple of months there will be three more Tchaikovsky releases, three more Debussys and a Telarc sampler disc.

In regards to the DTS DVDs, here is the latest info. Actually, I think people are a little confused at what Image Entertainment does. We are a laserdisc and DVD software distributor. However, some discs are exclusive to Image and some are non-exclusive (meaning a retailer can buy it from another distributor or directly from the home video company.) A non-exclusive title is one that we purchase directly from the home video company after it's been manufactured, shrink-wrapped etc., we then ship it to retailers. An Image-exclusive title is one that we purchase the rights from the studio to distribute exclusively, usually for a 5 year period. If a retailer wants an Image exclusive title, they can only get it from us. By having exclusive titles, we hope that a retailer will go ahead and buy the non-exclusive titles from us as well. We also do a little production work on the exclusive titles (chapter stopping, formating, AC-3 encoding, menus for DVD, and then we send the master tape out to be manufactured. We also design and create the jackets.)

In regards to DTS product we are the exclusive distributor for the laserdiscs (which we do some production work on) and for the compact discs (which are completely produced, manufactured, shrink-wrapped etc. by DTS and HDS). We have some control over the release of the laserdiscs, but no control over what CDs are released and when they come out. Now to get to your actual question (sorry for this becoming so long-winded), Image was not give the exclusive distribution rights to Universal's DTS DVDs. We will be one of many distributors who will be carrying them, and as such, have no control over when or what they release. I can tell you that Universal officially announced their first 20 titles that they are going to start releasing the first week of January. Even though some of them could have been released before Christmas, Universal decided they didn't want to risk confusing the consumers, the retailers, the buyers, etc. with another format during the all-important Christmas buying season. Whether their decision is reasonable or not, DTS has not been able to convince them otherwise. So, DTS came to us and asked if we owned the rights to anything that could be put out on a DTS DVD before Christmas. Unfortunately, most of the films that we currently own the rights to, such as Robocop and Silence of the Lambs, don't have 5.1 soundtracks. However, we are rushing through production some concerts, one major motion picture and the Imax film Super Speedway (using a brand new 20-bit audio master). As soon as we get some test samples back from DTS next week, we are going to officially announce the titles and their street dates. Some will make it out in November, others in December.

I hope this rambling e-mail answers your questions. I fully understand everyones frustrations over the delay of these titles, believe me, nobody wants these things out more than me. I spend my days answering e-mails and phone calls on the subject.

If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask.
