Ugliness in the UK

Buzz,

The closure of Mordaunt-Short is unfortunate but hardly surprising given the need for TGI to slim down. Given the choice between that marque and Tannoy, there could only be one looser especially as Tannoy are now expanding into the lucrative American market.

However, the industry is in a muddle here and it's fairly clear that pricing and to a lesser extent corporate apathy (throughout the workforce) are largely to blame.

Apart from my beloved Tannoy (which I would buy myself given half the chance) I really don't care about the UK manufacturers. Although the industry brain-pool is predominantly English, the cutting edge manufacturers are either American or Far Eastern. This, coupled with the "best bang for the buck" factor means that if there were no UK Hi-Fi industry whatsoever the high-end audio/videophile would hardly be effected unless they were hell bent on owning a load of Arcam gear (or whatever).

You know… apart from the aforementioned loudspeaker company, I can't think of another English manufacturer whose products cannot be bettered from overseas sources. Book my room in the Tower now.

Stuart.
