Hi, Adam,

: My dealer made an even trade with me for a new Theater Master SL-9000.
However, after getting it home I found one drawback I didn't want to
deal with. The device selection and the input selection for the preamp
is combined into a single button for each device to be controlled. For
example, selecting the TV button selects the TV input to the preamp and
also selects the TV controls. With the DC-1 this is a problem for me,
because sometimes I, and especially my wife, watch TV without turning on
the whole system. Everytime I would select TV to control, it would turn
on the DC-1 because selecting any input to the DC-1 automatically
switches it ON.

The Marantz RC 2000 mk II will solve this problem easily for you. When you press one of its input buttons, it switches to the remote command set for that unit, but doesn't switch the preamp input unless you press the input button a second time (double click). This way, you can control the device without affecting the preamp (you must have the mk II version for this). There are also separate on/off buttons for source components. I imagine if you sometimes listen to the TV through its own speakers vs. routing its audio through the DC-1 the macro feature would come in handy for that as well.

: Has anyone used the new Sony RM-AV2000?
This looks excellant for the money.

I checked out the Sony remote you mentioned a while back, and as I recall it it's very limited, either in its capacity to learn commands from other remotes or program macros. Both are very useful functions--especially macros that let you execute complex command sequences with a single button.

: I am currently using a Rotel RR990 remote, but I don't really like it
because the buttons are not intuitive. You have to remember which
buttons do what, because they are not always labeled with the right
description for what you are controlling.

There are some new high-powered remotes coming onto the market now (madrigal and Phillips have one, and Microsoft has another). These offer a lot of flexibility in terms of being able to program the interface as well as lots more macros, but they're all touch screens. Personally, I don't like a remote that I can't operate by feel--if I have to light it up in a dark room and squint at the buttons it's really distracting.

That's why I still prefer the Marantz with its physical buttons which you can identify by size and shape.

Good luck,
Philip Brandes
