What DVD player are you using, not a Toshiba perhaps? I've seen this problem reported by many Toshiba owners using all sorts of decoders. Either way, I'd guess it's a player problem rather than a DC-1 hiccup, but the way to tell is to beg, borrow or steal another DVD player to experiment with (preferably another brand just to be on the safe side).
