24 bit Dacs, however, potentially have one large advantage, assuming one can develop a 24 bit word along the way: it allows for much, much better digital volume control because a higher resolution is maintained.

As an example, I use a Meridian 518 processor which can change the incoming word size from 16 bits to 24 bits and output 24 bit words into a 24 bit processor, and this in turn allows me to use the 518 as a digital pre-amp with very high quality volume control.

Presumably, using 24 bit Dacs may allow the Lexicon to provide much better digital volume control, but I'll defer to Buzz on that.
