New DAC's Posted by Philip Brandes [IP: 205.188.198.187] on December 01, 1998 at 12:48:30: In Reply to: New DAC's posted by Edward M. Shain on December 01, 1998 at 10:14:26: You're right about 24-bit providing better potential resolution for processors with digital domain volume controls. However, the DC-1 performs volume control in the analog domain, following D/A conversion. (Andre reports it uses the Crystal Semiconductor 3310 attenuator chip for this purpose.) So in this application, the DC-1's switch to 24-bit DACs should have no benefit in volume control. Interesting info about the Meridian, though--digital volume controls are notoriously difficult to implement, so they've managed quite an enginnering feat. Regards, : 24 bit Dacs, however, potentially have one large advantage, assuming one can develop a 24 bit word along the way: it allows for much, much better digital volume control because a higher resolution is maintained. : As an example, I use a Meridian 518 processor which can change the incoming word size from 16 bits to 24 bits and output 24 bit words into a 24 bit processor, and this in turn allows me to use the 518 as a digital pre-amp with very high quality volume control.
