Chuck I will attempt to answer you point by point

1. Would it be even possible to hear digital jitter, or "vibration" through a $500.00 speaker system after a person spent $2,500 for a great CD/Pre amp combo? Meaning that they only spent the $500.00 because they could not afford more than that now that they had spent so much for their CD/Pre amp.

You make a good point but I think you forgot the system hieracy if you have a primo CD player able to resolve alot of detail and a amp pre amp combo that will allow this to pass then the speakers need not be so good as they are not reproduceing as much distortion
I think that if someone had a great combo like this then some thing like the NHT super ones/twos (giant killers by the way)would be more that an adiqueiet stop gap.

2.Do you not think that it would be more wise to put the $2,500 into the speaker system, and only $500 into a CD/integrated amp since (in the real world) what you will be hearing is the speakers, not the CD.

NO as I mentioned before garbage in garbage out a $500 CD player is just that a $500 CD player.ocationally you get a great one but the more money spent on DACs, filtering, and so on make a difference, this is why people buy in to Theta,Meridain, and top end Sonys its more than just a good looking machine time and money is devoted to eliminating distortions of all sorts this may only yeild a 20% improvement but it can make the difference
And £2500 speaker package (pair) would be ruthlessly reveling of the inadequaces of the CD player
so the way it should work is source- preamp-amp-speakers
but thats not as common any more as CD players have improved so the most money need not be spent there.

3. Does the majority of the public (unlike you) at this time really know what digital jitter is, and secondly, (and more importantly) know what to listen for in order to recognize what digital jitter sounds like?

I don't thing that they do and no if it hit them betewwn the eyes they wouldn't know what it was.
But I can tell you this when peolpe go into a store to buy a Midi system they turn up the volume to see how lould it will play before/without distoring Same with car stereo

To us the DC1 owners and Meridain/theta etc this Hieary thng still applys I am not saying that you cannot get away with a cheap DVD player but a Theata DaVid (dumb name) would out peform a Panasonic 110a used as a transport its better built and you WILL hear the difference also a better amp in thechain will allow you to hear more difference in your DC1 system speakers even though they have great influence as they are what you are "hearing" are the last on the list
Thats how I would go about upgradeing my system Sony make the 7000 DVD player
$1000 but I know a guy that swears his Meridain is better he sold his to buy one and its more in keeping with the hierary thing its closer in price to the DC1

I hoped this helped, these are my views and I am not meaning to force them on you I could be wrong.
