CP3 question

While everybody is waiting for the DC-2, I got a more than bargain price on one of the last CP-3.

I have one question about input gain adjustment. What is the best method :

1- find the loudest DVD / LD / VCR tape and manually adjust each input to avoid overload.
2- define a AVERAGE level for each input and leave the automatic gain adjustment do the work for me.

Another question : I have standard (non dipolar) rear speaker for now (I will upgrade soon). In the speaker set-up menu do I have an interest (sonically speaking) to set parameter as "dipolar" instead of "standard". I think not but I prefer a confirmation.
