I have tried a lot of different levels for small sides and have found that around 5 feet gave me a realistic sound presence. If it is much higher the sound shoots over your head unless you really position a direct speaker and then the sweet spot is too narrow.
I experimented with someone holding them at different levels. You could also use a ladder to do it by yourself.
