DTS v. Lexicon question Posted by Andrew Clark [Lexicon] on October 01, 1998 at 15:58:35: In Reply to: DTS v. Lexicon question posted by George Mills on October 01, 1998 at 11:56:33: dts audio as it is delivered from a 5" music disc or laserdisc doesn't contain any flags to identify itself as dts audio. In fact, as far as a digital audio product is concerned dts audio looks exactly like PCM audio until the dts decoder properly identifies it. This process takes a small amount of time and explains why you here a brief burst of noise upon playback of dts audio. Although we could have set a longer mute time when skipping tracks on a disc, this would mean you would miss the first half second of every track on a regular CD. We felt this was unacceptable and decided to give you the option to hear the noise and utilize our auto-switching feature. If the noise is too bothersome you can dedicate an input for "dts only" and forego the auto-switching feature. Since dts encodes their software without flags, this is the trade-off every manufacturer of dts equipped decoders is faced with. Some just don't give you the option.
