George,

: There are about 4 or so surround modes in the Lexicon. Most are variations of one another.

"Four or so". Guesswork, unfounded guesswork too. If not, tell me how Nightclub is related to Panorama, Church is related to Mono Logic and Concert Hall related to Logic 7. That's more than four. I assume you'll be able to explain the relationship between at least two, otherwise the first line of your message is bunk.

: Who cares who developed what.

Re-read the previous messages in this thread. Dylan put forward that we are already paying for algorithms developed by Lexicon, I mentioned that Circle Surround was not developed by Lexicon (or Theta in this case), therefore there are no R&D costs involved, just licensing and implementation.

: You paid Lexicon for Zoran's AC-3 DSP decoder and THX processing (which is part of Logic-7).

I also paid for the pre-amp which went with them, and besides, since when is THX part of Logic 7? They share home theatre features, but are they the same? Have you read the Logic 7 technical paper yet George?

: Note that a lot of the options on the CasaNova are chips that go on some of the other cards. I don't know if they are PROMs, processors, or "Hardware Keys". It does not really matter though. AC-3, DTS, Circle Surround and AC-RF are chips.

Dolby Digital and DTS can be performed by the same IC, demodulation by another (there is only one demodulation IC) whereas Circle Surround can be performed by the 'DSP' IC which already resides in the processor, could be the same one, or a 'DSP' IC set can run all three. The Analog Devices SHARC family comes to mind.

Any company can license the Circle Surround 5:2:5 algorithm from Rocktron, then all that is needed is a Motorola 56009 'DSP' IC (which many processors, including the Lexicon already uses for 'DSP' modes), or in the Analog Devices AD1838.

Either way, you're right, it doesn't matter, $300 for the addition of Circle Surround is ridiculous.

Stuart.
