: Oh, ok guys. You win. The point of debate is that two sides of opinion are welcomed. Philip, you certainly don't hold back yours...

Debate has rules, Al. Not every opinion is equally valid when one makes unfair assumptions and expectations, and unfairly drags a company's or a person's reputation through the mud. If you say things that are inaccurate or make irrational demands, you're going to get called on it. Since you pointedly duck all the issues I raised about how other companies handle new product roll-outs, I take it you're conceding those points in our "debate."

: I have been very satisfied with my DC-1. What is wrong with the pursuit of the pursuit of the "latest and greatest"? Most normal people don't purchase $40K home theater systems anyway, and those of us who do clearly strive for acoustical perfection. I merely express my frustration with the plunge in resale market value of a product that I purchased 12 months ago. Whether I tradeup or not will not revolve around cost of the upgrade rather than improvement in the product via new heralded technology. Either way guys, I like a good debate and I am sorry if you equate an opinion that doesn't mimic yours as "childish."

Nothing is wrong with the pursuit of the "latest and greatest." It's a fine thing to aspire to-if you can afford it. What's wrong is expecting someone else to pay for it. The economic reality of any equipment purchase is that it loses value over time, especially when new products are inevitably introduced. If you aren't able to absorb that, then you've bought in over your head. That's not Lexicon's fault.

You don't even know the terms of the trade-in offer, but you've already announced that you're dissatisfied with it. Your "opinion" seems to be that Lexicon should replace all 10,000 DC-1s out there with MC-1s at or below their cost. That isn't going to happen-they are not going to go broke just to make you feel warm and cozy. I don't consider your opinion "childish" (your word) because it differs from mine-I just don't think it's congruent with adult economic reality.

: Buzz, you clearly are likened to the messenger who has been told to "stall them" for the last several monthsŠ

: My local Lexicon dealer has no information to offer. They have no DC-2's in stock and will offer no availability date. They are not sure wheteher or not if they will honor the upgrade path to the MC-1 because they have had no Lexicon sales in the last 3 months due to the announcement and delay of the new and improved and CHEAPER DC-2. I am not the only frustrated customer out here guys...

That's very funny. Lexicon said not one word about new products until CES last month, which was right on target with their Q1'99 release plan. The product is shipping in Feb. on schedule. So where is this "stall" and "delay" you keep ranting about? The only hints Lexicon dropped early were about planned upgrades to the DC-1, which would only have INCREASED its value.

Ironically, the drop in sales in the last 3 months was due entirely to the speculative chatter among DC-1 owners on this forum. Sure it's a natural impulse to gossip, but none of these sales-choking rumors of a new processor came from Lexicon-it came from all the people who kept guessing in a public forum which is closely read in the audio industry.

Are people entitled to express their opinions here? Absolutely, but everyone should bear in mind that doing so can have consequences. If anything, the drop in sales you describe over the preceding months shows how influential this forum has become. I'm sure Lexicon isn't any happier about the sales drop than you are-it's cost them money, plus the inventory backlog has led to the blowout dealer prices you and others are now complaining about. But if you're going to point fingers, point them in the right direction.

As for whether your dealer goes along with the Lexicon trade-in offer, Lexicon has no legal right to enforce it and dealers can sell the product for whatever they want. But you also have some leverage as to whether you buy from them or not. You might also try approaching Lexicon to see if they can lobby on your behalf with your dealer. But be sure and trash them in more public posts first, so they'll be real motivated to help you.
