what happened to my surround effects?

Careful about trusting that stereo light on the front of your tv and/or vcr. When it lights up, all it means is that it's detecting a stereo carrier. The material may still be completely mono.

Then ofcourse, there's that "other" reason why many surround processors go completely mono. No one likes to discuss it in public, but... anytime a manufacturer comes out with a new processor, there's a secret "special" chip that goes active in the older models that renders them...I'm joking folks, I'm joking! (Philip probably had his keyboard out of the holster and pointed at my forehead by now!)
