Actually, it most likely depends on which state you live in. Here in Massachusetts, last time I bought a new vehicle, the sales tax was calculated on the difference between the price of the new vehicle and what I got for a trade-in on the old vehicle, as you've already paid tax on the amount of the trade in value previously.

Of course the government thinks it's ok to tax you on your previous year tax refund, even though you've already paid income tax on it...

Taxes are a blast, aren't they?
