I think that people have found that room dimensions do little to alleviate room modes, other than to avoid really obvious mistakes like cubes. You may want to aim for something in the vicinity of an ideal room, but you shouldn't sweat the inches. Instead, bass traps and room treatments do a lot more. If you are going to be building a new room, I would suggest construction that minimizes outside noise. The gains in transparency, and all those other audiophile descriptions a truly quiet room gives you is immense, and in my experience worth far more than ideal room dimensions.

Non-parallel walls only make room modes more difficult to analyze --- room modes still exist in the same way and strength as in a room with parallel walls, so don't bother with non-parallel walls.

I would start by checking out Art Ludwig's website linked down below. There you can find out about the room he's built, along with a lot of technical information and references. I've been in Art's room, and it is very nice acoustically.
