Room Acoustics

You may want to aim for something in the vicinity of an ideal room, but you shouldn't sweat the inches. Instead, bass traps and room treatments do a lot more. If you are going to be building a new room, I would suggest construction that minimizes outside noise. The gains in transparency, and all those other audiophile descriptions a truly quiet room gives you is immense, and in my experience worth far more than ideal room dimensions. Non-parallel walls only make room modes more difficult to analyze --- room modes still exist in the same way and strength as in a room with parallel walls, so don't bother with non-parallel walls. I would start by checking out Art Ludwig's website linked down below. There you can find out about the room he's built, along with a lot of technical information and references. I've been in Art's room, and it is very nice acoustically. --Andre
