Help me decide on Lexicon
Posted by Richard Bow [IP: 12.11.158.133] on March 31, 1999 at 20:39:15 I have perused this forum over the last few days, and know that similar questions have been posed before, but would appreciate any help with my dilemma / questions: I am very interested in getting a used DC-1, which seem to offer very good value at the moment, but after deciding that it was worth $2000 starting asking myself a few other questions: 1. The Classe SSP-25 seems to be a good unit. Analog bypass seems like a great feature. I know it doesn't do 7.1 but that's probably not a big deal for me. It has S/N ration >100 dB. Of course it is $3000 list so that it will cost me more than a used DC-1. 2. The dynamic range/ S/N ratio of the DC-1 is 'only' 90dB. This seems low compared to other units (Classe / proceed). Also how is volume is done in digital domain - does it 'throw away' bits so that low volume operation is comprimised? I am convinced that on movies the lexicon would be a better bet, but the low S/N and digital volume make me nervous for 2-channel. Also I can't seem to find a dealer to show me an actual lexicon unit. All the dealers I've contacted that advertise Lexicon as one of their brands try to sell me the proceed / Classe, etc. I would also love to find a dealer that has a dc-1 that was traded in towards a mc-1 since it is unlikely that i will ever do that myself and don't care that it can't be done. I live in Massachusetts and would appreciate a referral to some dealers that do Lexicon. If there are dealers in other parts of the country that could ship one of their traded-in dc-1s that would also be good, since i assume they are not prohibited from mail-order on used units. I would like to see a real 'live' unit though before buying one. This really surprises me since Lexicon in based in Massachusetts. I look forward to peoples comments on the analog / Classe / S:N / dealer questions. Thank you in advance,
