I'm probably just dumb but I'm not sure I understand "digitally controlled ANALOG volume". Is there a simple way to explain this.

I presume an analog signal is first converted to digital through a A/D, the volume is controlled in the digital phase and then converted back to D/A. What I don't understand then is how the volume control can then be classified as analog?
