Richard,

" So when the dc-1 'sees' a plain vanilla stereo analog signal, it does a A/D then a D/A without doing anything in-between,"

Well.. it could do plenty in the digital stages. Any and all processing (crossovers, loudness, time align, all surround modes) and the like are done digitally. After it reconverted to analog it hits the volume control then is output the L/R outputs.

"Is this what drives the lower S/N ratio? "

Only Lexicon could probably answer that accurately. I think the unit has a better S/N ratio with direct digital inputs so it's possible. What analog source are you worried about? Most have MUCH lower S/N ratios then the Lexicons.

BTW, I didn't mention it before but it is possible to get an analog pass-thru in the Lexicon. You need to use the Zone-2 output... and you get no processing of the signal at all.... just volume control.

Shawn
