S/N is "only" 90 dB. 90dB is (approximately) a 512 times difference in perceived volume. 90 dB is also (even more approximately) the difference between a whisper and a cannon. In other words, if you are listening to full volume recordings of cannons, there will be noise at the volume of a whisper. Some people may argue that they can tell the difference between 90 dB S/N and 100 dB S/N, but I will bet a dollar that if you ABX'd two units where only the S/N was altered nobody would be able to tell. My totally unfounded guestimate is that >70 dB is a good point of zero return on investment for total system S/N.

One more note about dB and then I'll shut up. dB is a 10*log scale, if you have two pieces in a row (like a preamp, and a power amp) that both have 90 dB S/N, you have a total of 87 dB S/N. If you have a preamp with 90 dB and a power amp with 80 dB, the total is 79.6 dB...the weakest link dominates the overall rating
