Thanks for all the advice - I take the point on S/N ratio. I am sure that it is not audible, but I was thinking more in terms of how it reflected on the underlying construction.

Another pre/pro alternative I have been seriously considering is the EAD TheaterMaster. It seems to have a good digital credentials (EAD did first AC-3 decoder). It obviously does not do 7.1 audio and those types of things, but from what I have heard it does stereo better. Still can't find a place to show me a DC-1 (the place in norwood didn't return my call) - I would love to trust my ears, but it seems like Lexicon's NE dealers are not winning any awards here.

So I'm left to the advice of you guys...
