I mentioned my experience some time ago for a similar question. I used the Delos DVD Spectacular disc to generate a test tone in the center-rear using the my two rear speakers. The tone was solid and stable. Based on this, I don't think a speaker is actually needed. I've even heard a number of Dolby Digital movies create a very believable image directly behind me (unfortunately, I can't remember which ones they were). But don't take my word for it, try it yourself before you think about investing in what may be quite unnecessary.
