Analog Bypass - Help!!

I continue to use a conventional preamp for my analogue source, as the DC1 simply doesn't sound as good, likely due in part to the additional conversions taking place.

If I could figure out how to use the DC1 just as a volume control for analogue, and also for the output of my regular hifi DAC, (both without unecessary AD DA conversion, I could probably make do without a separate preamp. I gather that this is a hard thing to do, though?
