Connection of Future Digital Amplifiers

Meridian is certainly the leader here, but A/D/S, B & O, etc., also have or are planning similiar speakers. The signal still travels from the transport, to dac, to analog amp, to speaker. They are only building the dac and amp into the speaker. Personally, with all the magnetic fields and mechanical vibration inside a speaker, I would think that it is the worst place to put the electronics. Simply moving from housing everything separately, to housing it all in the speaker, seems like a lateral, if not backward, step to me. The same problems that arrise in a reciever will arrise in this type of design. If an individual component needs upgrading, the whole thing needs replacing. If one part goes down, the entire system goes down. You can no longer pick and system match the dac, amp and speakers that you like the best, and that create the best personal sound for you. Look at B&O. It works well as a system, but try and match it to other equipment, and it becomes a huge pain. I know, I helped my mom buy a B&O system. It works well for her, but she is not an audiophile that likes to play with cables to get the sound she likes. You would no longer have the freedom to make your system personal. You would be restricted in most every way that makes this hobby fun. You could no longer play with different amps to get the sound that you like. Also, I don't really feel that you are gaining anything except reducing the interference picked up in the speaker cable runs that would no longer be required, but this is not gernerally a problem anyway. My 0.02. Josh
