Too much champagne for Lucas?

I just watched a small part of George Lucas interview on the "E" channel. It was after the Golden Globes.

He said that Star Wars episode 1 will have a new sound format that uses "stereo" speakers at the back of the theater. I assume he is referring to Surround EX which, I thought, uses a mono channel for the rear.

Is Lucas confused or am I?
