The Volvo C70 (Saint car)comes standard with a Dolby prologic system on board and it dosen't sound to bad either I had one for a week and was impressed that manufacture would go to such lenghts with a standard system in a car.

In my own car BMW 5 series I have 8 inch kef uni-Qs up front and 6inch(tweeters disabled) on the rear parcel sheleves) in the trunck I have a 10inch box firing though the ski flap, and an Alpine unit that does BBE but I have wired the rear parcel shelf speakes in the "Hafler" configeration
The Amp I use is a Genesis Five channel that has an on board crossovers that allow me to run the front and bass with out pasive crossovers, active the improvement there was awesome and a relatively cheap upgrade.
It does make the journeys home more pleasant.
but the bigest improvement to the system was a layer of sound deading materail in the trunk and rear floor area you can still hear the system at 90 mph on the M40.

It also depends on the Car I have heard cars with huge amounts of power, sound like getto blasters, If the enviroment is not right... bit like a room I surpose

Find a good after market dealer who is interseted in good sound and not loud"sound offs" and he can walk you thought it
