Relax on the balanced output guys!

I'm in total agreement with you.

One of the few things that I like about XLRs is that the connectors are very good, i.e. locking and directional.

However, if I owned REAL blalanced equipment like DAC, Pre and power (say Mark Levinson No 37, 360S, 380S, 333), then I would use balanced cables in order to take full advantage (if any) of the balanced circuit topology.

But on other equipment that simply converted single-ended signal to balanced via op-amps, forget it. Here, there is also the 6dB difference between the 2 formats, which many people seem to forget and think that balanced connection sounds better (becos it's 6dB louder).
