:Please explain to me how a unit that generates audible RF noise within itself will be cured of the problem with balanced lines?

That's another whole can of worms entirely! I am concerned about interconnects passing near TVs, digital devices, and other things that may put RF noise out. A copper room will not protect against such things if everything is in the same room.

:By the way - Good design is not limited to balanced lines. That statement is too limiting, and biased.

Clearly it is not limited to balanced lines, but I think it's undeniable that the whole RCA-terminated, unbalanced scheme we currently use is horribly underdesigned and was initially put in only because of cost reasons and not good engineering practices.

As for studios experiencing grounding problems --- unfortunately, as you well know, grounding is a tricky issue, and the type of scheme you use depends very much on how the equipment you are using is designed. A lot of pro equipment don't have correctly implemented balanced I/O and will suffer from hum and buzz. Try to get a copy of the July 1995 issue of the JAES where the topic of grounding is extensively discussed. It is orderable through the AES website listed below.
