Relax on the balanced output guys! Posted by Andre Yew [IP: 208.8.104.2] on February 05, 1999 at 18:23:55 In Reply to: Relax on the balanced output guys! posted by SMR [WizOp] February 04, 1999 at 23:21:31 It is somewhat well-known that musical instruments have strong harmonics way past 20 kHz. For example, struck instruments like claves and cymbals have harmonics extending to almost 100 kHz. Some instruments put out more energy above 20 kHz than below! It's not too surprising if you consider that the only magical thing about 20 kHz is that it's the natural human hearing limit, and that other things in nature aren't constrained by our hearing abilities. I have included a link below to a fairly careful study and measurements of these things. Another thing that 96kHz sampling gives you is the potential for simpler filters which can make good, inaudible filters easier to design. Right now, no one knows for sure whether this is audible or inaudible, but many believe this to be 96kHz sampling's greatest benefit, and not supra-20kHz signals. --Andre
