Robert,

Thanks for an informative post. You point out some encouraging developments, though I still think it will be a while before we see anything we can actually enjoy in our systems.

: at least one audience member asked whether it wouldn't make more sense to make DVD-A use only digital connections with the only signal being available at the line level analog outputs of the receiver being a 2 channel downmix. The RIAA spokesperson stated that that was "being considered." Obviously a decoder such as the MC-1 would have to have multi-channel analog outputs, but I don't see that as a problem because as of today there is no real home recording medium for analog multi-channel.

If they adopted a scheme like this, it would clear a lot of obstacles--and certainly be a better fit to the digital domain pre/pros than the analog-only format thus far established for DVD-A.

: From what I can tell, the record industry really wants DVD-A to succeed. But also from what I could tell, they don't see it as a replacement of CD but as a new medium and one that is well suited for alternative delivery systems (i.e., digital download onto DVD-R (which doesn't really exist yet)).

That's also good news. My biggest apprehension, though, lies with the consumer market. Even if the new format isn't positioned as an official "replacement" for CD, people will still have to invest in new equipment to play the new discs--not just players but their surround decoders as well. Despite the boom in home theater-related sales, the majority have dead-end receivers which would have to be replaced. I think it will be tough to convince them to do this just for better sound. This isn't based on my priorities, just an observation about what most people are perfectly content to settle for as far as audio quality is concerned.

I think that to be successful, these new formats will have to attract more than the hard-core enthusiast market, and that's a steep uphill climb. But I certainly hope they can do it.

In any case, please keep us posted on any new developments you're at liberty to discuss.

Regards,
Philip Brandes
