:I imagine die-hard two-channel listeners, even in the upper end of the market will resist the change to the gimmick of multi-channel music.

Quite a strong statement Stuart. It may be gimmick to you, but I have spoken to many mix guys and artists who feel that it is the closest thing to acoustic painting they have ever come to. The artistic freedom the additional channels allow is truly unreal. Freedom of expression is the key element to artists, and 5.1 allows them more freedom than ever before. This freedom will allow their music to become more and more communicative with the public, and (IMO) therefore, more fulfilling, embracing, and spiritual. By allowing artists to connect with the public on such a larger scale will (IMO) absolutely blow open the doors of music as we know it today. These glitches they are working out today have nothing to do with the key element I just mentioned, and there are many other intangible reasons I have not mentioned that back up this great medium--5.1. It can be easy to overlook the things that multi-channel represent if looking at it from a totally scientific view. It is for intangible reasons that some of these inventions happen. It (5.1) may not make any sense on paper, but I think it makes perfect sense for the way we all hear and perceive the world around us, and also in the indescribable reasons.
