I think that you may have hit on it. With the DC-1's amber display I did find that small changes to the viewing angle made a considerable difference in it's clarity. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of latitude to change the seating position or the position of the DC-1. Now, it's not critical and I can read the display of the MC-1 fine from the same distance.
