Bad MC-1; now I'm sure
Posted by Michael Reuben [IP: 32.100.111.14] on June 26, 1999 at 22:03:59 This mesage follows from the thread entitled "Got my MC-1 today; had a scare; now not sure". But I thought it deserved a separate header. The MC-1 that I picked up yesterday has now been revealed to be defective. The problem it suffers from is *not* the digital lock/no audio problem that has previously been discussed here. This unit never displays "no audio". It always indicates when it's receiving a DD signal, but at random points, the processing of the signal goes crazy. Depending on the source, it just pulses with distorted sound; or, on occasion, it can give you something that kinda, sorta sounds like the source material, only as performed by Alvin and the Chipmunks. As related in the earlier thread, this happened to me on initial installation, and it appeared to be cured by a complete power down and reset. Then tonight, it happened again spontaneously right in the middle of playing the new GHOSTBUSTERS DVD. Several power downs and resets later, the MC-1 came back just long enough to play the rest of the movie, and then it went on the blink again. I just did a "restore factory defaults" and it made no difference. Again, at no time does the unit display "no audio". As far as the MC-1 is concerned, it's still playing the DD signal. Meanwhile, analog and DTS remain unaffected. People who frequent this forum can appreciate that there are few things more disappointing than waiting many weeks for a high-end piece of equipment only to have it delivered and not work. The only consolation is that I haven't yet surrendered my DC-1 to my dealer. I'm off now to reinstall it back into my system. And tomorrow the MC-1 goes back. I haven't decided yet whether to cancel the order altogether or simply wait until such time as the bugs are worked out of the MC-1. Caveat upgrader. M.
