Comments on speakers purchase

Did you know that the gentlemen behind Genelec were Lexicon employees and broke away to found that company? At the CEDIA they were using an MC-1 as a source (with no amps of course) and were really impressed. In fact, they'd been using it all day with Dolby Digital sources but only in matrix Logic 7 from the 2/0.0 soundtrack. I had no idea about the Lexicon connection! Whaddaya know! Genelec made the smart marketing move of lending their speakers to many vendors at last year's NAB convention to use in their exhibit hall displays. The Genelec's good looks caught my eye, but when I heard them used to monitor the output of a Wheatstone TV-1000, the audio board that I was purchasing for our company, I was very impressed. :I'm also curious about the models with an S/P-DIF input and what type of data it supports. For example, is there a toggle to select left or right with a bi-phase signal? I also wonder if they'd be usable in a Meridian system - one way to get away from the latter company's own loudspeakers perhaps. Interesting questions. I really never looked into their S/P-DIF models. TV production audio is still pretty much an analog world. There are digital boards out there, but to get the level of logic switching and other capabilities that we need the cost of digital is still prohibitive in large TV audio consoles. We anticipate that our foray into multichannel audio for DTV will primarily consist of embedded audio passed through from network programs at least for the first few years. After I had purchased the Genelecs last year, I got wind of Vergence/NHT Pro deal. Hmmm, maybe they'll come out with a professional version of the 3.3. If so, I'll have to install a critical monitoring station in my office. ;-) -Les
