: One thing to remember about DD 5.1 is that it assumes that the 5 channels are full-range, in addition to bass added by the .1 channel. The .1 channel can and does contain information not carried in any of the other channels, so unless you want to redirect bass to your other speakers, the .1 channel is necessary. The answer to your question then should be both! Get full-range sides and a .1 channel.

I agree this is optimal, but if he doesn't have room for three 18" subs, he could go without a .1 sub and still not lose anything. He could use two, put them on the sides, and configure his setup as large sides, small for everything else, and no sub. LFE .1 would then get routed to the sides.

Obviously there are trade-offs--he'd lose the ability to independently adjust sub volume from the Lex, but he'd be getting better use of the Bass Enhance feature.

His other question, though, is even tougher--if he can't use identical subs for everything, which should get the better quality sub? My guess is that the more powerful sub would be best used to handle the LFE explosions and whatnot, whereas tighter, more musical subs would work better sides. But you could argue that in a mixed use system, the sides will see the most LF action, so they should be the better quality units...then again, who has that much room...

Well, I agree with you, Andre...experiment. It would be nice to borrow multiple subs and cables and see what works best.

If you do, Bruce, please post your observations. Bass Enhance is a brand new frontier, and many of us are interested.

Cheers,
Philip Brandes
